Experience an unforgettable musical journey with BBC Radio 3's Summer Concert at the Ulster Hall, Belfast on 02 August 2024!
Join BBC Radio 3 for its 2024 series of Summer Invitation Concerts with the Ulster Orchestra. This year they’ll mark the centenary of the death of Charles Villiers Stanford, and explore themes of the Sea and Fairytales. Expect a broad range of music, from well-known works to lesser-known gems.
Stanford’s rarely-heard Piano Concerto No. 2 is at the heart of this programme.
Written in 1911, it’s a work of grand tradition, lyrical and perhaps inspired by Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 2: the first English performance of which Stanford had given in Leeds the previous year. On this occasion the celebrated Irish pianist Finghin Collins will be at the keyboard.
The concert is bookended by Chausson’s Viviane, Op. 5 – his first purely orchestral work, written in 1882 – and Rendering, Berio’s development of sketches written by Schubert in the final weeks of his life, in preparation for his 10th Symphony.
Jac Van Steen conducts.
